The tide has turned again, this time in favour of Wellington

Battle of Toulouse - Move 8

Bottom – Hill has regrouped and is attacking across the bridge again

Left – Picton’s infantry are struggling to fight their way into Toulouse

Top Left – Spanish infantry are closing on the French square

Top Right – Beresford continues to retreat in the face of two French corps

British Left

Beresford retreats with his two infantry brigades in square

Despite the overwhelming odds, the British infantry still do some damage

The right hand square has caused casualties on the cuirassiers who are shaken

Spanish infantry attack French square

Two Spanish infantry brigades attack the French square protecting the gunners

Two to one seems pretty good odds……..

Spanish infantry retreat from French square

….however the two Spanish columns lose the melee with the single French square

Both lose 10% casualties and retire shaken, leaving a hold in the Spanish centre.

British Centre

Friere’s Spanish infantry have advanced to support their cavalry

It all ends in tears when two Spanish brigades lose a melee with one French square

They retire shaken, leaving a gap in the centre of the Spanish line

Then the shaken Spanish cavalry lose their morale and rout

So much for the Spanish attempt to save Beresford.

British Right

Wellington has ordered Picton to attack Toulouse

He only has two brigades on his left to launch the attack

Both are repulsed shaken

His two right hand brigades have taken part of Toulouse

British south of river

Hill has rallied his shaken infantry brigades and continued to attack Toulouse

Assisted by Picton he has taken half of Toulouse


Game Notes

Wellington has taken most of Toulouse

Soult has used his reserve to crush Beresford.

He has now ordered one corps to pursue Beresford and the second to attack Freire

He seems to have abandoned Toulouse to its fate.

In the closing stages of the battle much will depend on how many casualties Wellington suffers. If he still has a viable army at nightfall a second days battle may be called for.

Top Right – Beresford is trying to retreat but is pinned by French cuirassiers

Beresford has formed square with his two remaining brigade

French cuirassiers are preventing them from retiring

British Centre

Friere’s cavalry have again charged close to a French square and taken casualties

They charged home on the shaken enemy chasseurs, who broke and ran

The Spanish infantry are closing on the French square

British Right

Pictons infantry continue to skirmish Toulouse

He has ordered his artillery to move to the left flank

Wellington has arrived to decide whether to order an attack


British south of river

Hill has rallied his shaken infantry brigades

They are still disordered but will be able to advance next move

Game Notes

The French are slow to react to the Spanish advance

They have broken Beresford, but still have two full corps attacking him

Picton is unable to fight his way into Toulouse, but Wellington is about to change his orders to attack

Hill has rallied his broken brigades and will soon resume his attack across the bridge

Battle of Toulouse - Move 6

Bottom – Hill is crossing bridge to attack Toulouse

Left – Picton’s cavalry protect his infantry as they move towards Toulouse

Top Right – Beresford has started to rout as he is attacked by two French corps

Cuirassiers cut down Beresford’s infantry and gunners who are already in rout

British Left

Wellington has joined Beresford to order him to retreat

But it is already too late as half of his corps have been cut down

The remaining infantry form square against the cuirassiers

Two French corps are about to attack them

Spanish dragoons charge French gunners

The Spanish cavalry declare an opportunity charge on the flank of the gunners

As they charge they receive casualties from the nearby square

They make their morale, charge home and cut down all of the gunners

British Centre

Friere’s Spanish corps advance to support Beresford

His cavalry have cut down the French gunners

But his infantry are too late to save Beresford

British Right

Pictons infantry skirmish with the garrison of Toulouse

His hussars have routed the enemy cavalry

British south of river

Hill’s leading brigade have routed from Toulouse into their supports on the bridge

His attack is in danger of falling apart

Game Notes

Beresford is broken and in rout

The Spanish are advancing to support Beresford, but are too late

Picton is skirmishing with the garrison of Toulouse, but having little effect

Hill’s attack south of the river is in trouble

His leading brigade took heavy casualties in Toulouse, broke and ran

They disorganized the infantry crossing the bridge to support them

The two French corps which broke Beresford can now turn to face the Spanish.

The tide is turning against Wellington.

Battle of Toulouse - Move 5

Left – Picton’s cavalry clash with French, infantry approach Toulouse

Top – Beresford is in trouble as both Darmagnac and Taupin advance

British Left

Beresford starts to crumble as the French attack.

His cavalry have lost the melee with the French cuirassiers and are in rout

The gunners had retreated to the nearby square, but the infantry broke and joined the rout

The remaining two British brigades are now in an impossible position

British Centre

Friere’s Spanish corps advance to support Beresford, but will be too late

Their cavalry have flanked the French guns, but refuse to charge them

The infantry advance in column, but the enemy artillery could destroy them

British Right

Picton’s cavalry have won the melee and routed the enemy chasseurs

His infantry are within skirmish range of the city, but no casualties on either side yet

His artillery have again proved ineffective

British south of river

Hill’s leading brigade has taken the right hand section of Toulouse

But enemy artillery have caused heavy casualties, and the infantry have routed

The remainder of his infantry cross the bridge to press home the attack

His artillery engage the enemy gunners, but fail to cause any casualties
